COURSE DESCRIPTION:
During the second semester this course will cover the important events and turning points from 1820-1877. The following topics will be discussed: The Jacksonian Era, Westward Expansion, The Worlds of North and South, The Era of Reform, A Dividing Nation, The Civil War, The Reconstruction Era. Each topic will explain America’s response to the events that occur during this time period.
COURSE EXPECTATIONS / GOALS / BENCHMARKS / OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this course is to increase student’s knowledge of the development of the United States as a democratic nation. It also informs students of the struggles, sacrifices and perseverance of American citizens as well as the great American victories that shaped our nation today.

MAJOR COURSE ASSIGNMENTS / REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to do all the directed readings from the text book, take notes, and complete in-class assignments. Students are responsible for obtaining notes/information from missed classes during times of absence. Students must have a notebook and two-pocket folder for this class.
GRADING AND ASSESSMENTS (TESTS AND QUIZZES):
The history department follows the grading scale approved by the Anchor Bay School District Board of Education. See your student handbook/planner for the district policy. Assignments will normally be graded within one or two school days. Tests and writing assignments may need a couple additional days.
HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK:
May include the following: Readings, Daily Assignments, Bell Ringers, Constructive Responses, and/or Projects and Papers.
LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY
Students are expected to do all assigned homework. All assignments will be submitted for full credit on the due date specified by the instructor. Late assignments are subject to the following district Late Assignment Policy.
NOTE: Percent is taken off grade earned on assignment.
10% - 1st day late
20% - 2nd day late
30% - 3rd day late
40% - 4th day late
50% - 5th day late
No credit after day 5
ABSENT WORK
The Anchor Bay School Middle School South handbook will be followed for all absent work.
CLASSROOM CONDUCT
Anchor Bay Middle School South code of conduct disciplinary steps will be followed in this course. Cell phones/MP3/CD/IPOD/Headphones/Electronic devices shall be LEFT IN LOCKERS and are NOT ALLOWED in the classroom. Food, candy and drinks (except clear water bottles) are also prohibited in the classroom.
