Texas Wins Independence In 1835, American settlers in Texas revolted against Mexican rule and in 1836, set up the independent Republic of Texas. California and the Southwest As Americans learned more about California and the Southwest in the 1840's, many came to think that the United States should expand its borders to the Pacific Ocean. Learning Targets: -List the reasons the first white settlers came to New Mexico. -Describe what California life was like for Native Americans. -Explain why Americans wanted their nation to expand to the Pacific Ocean. War with Mexico As a result of the Mexican War, the United States expanded its borders to the Pacific Ocean. Learning Targets: -Describe how the U.S. gained Oregon. -Identify the causes and results of the Mexican War. A Rush to the West In the late 1840s, thousands of Americans headed west, including the Mormons who went to Utah and the forty-niners who headed to California. Learning Targets: -Describe why and how the Mormons settled in Utah. -Describe how the discovery of gold affected life in California. -Explain why California had a diverse population.
